Pecha Kucha Response
The pecha kucha that I have chosen to respond to is the pecha kucha by Abdullah and Iqbal. I found their topic very interesting, and they related very well back to Haroun and The Sea of Stories. I like how they related Khattum-Shud and the leaders of the genocide. The Rwandan genocide has close ties to the story of Haroun and they connected them very well. Their presentation helped me understand the book much more. The relation of Khattam-Shud sewing people’s mouths closed and the leaders killing anyone that would rebel or talk about the genocide. The relation between the Hutus and the Tutsis to the Gups and the Chups helped me understand the civil hatred that could come between two cities. Kambanda and Akayesu were the two war criminals; they related these two men to Khattam-Shud and his shadow. These two men were essentially each other’s shadow and helped one another in times of need. This relation helped me understand more about Khattam-Shud and his evil ways.

When I first heard of this story I was astounded by home much it reminded me of Macbeth's murder of Duncan. The most apparent similarity is the rivalry between Harding and Kerrigan and between Macbeth and Duncan. Rivalry causes people to act irrationally and do things some may regret. Duncan and Kerrigan were above their rival, Macbeth and Harding, and for that they felt like less of a competitor or man. In both rivalries the lesser needed to take over the top spot, in both cases the only way they could think to do this is using violence. There are also many similarities between Kerrigan and her ex-husband and Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. Kerrigan and Lady Macbeth both persuaded the other into doing the deed, both Macbeth and the ex-husband regretted doing the deed instantaneously. Our significant others have immense power over us because we want to keep them happy, this is seen between Kerrigan and her ex-husband and Lady Macbeth and Macbeth.

Vladimir Putin has emerged into a well known world wide figure. Many know that he has begun to invade Ukraine and attempt to make the country part of Russia. Putin has many different characteristics that would match perfectly to the play of Macbeth.
Many people say that Putin has a very false confidence in himself exactly how Macbeth has in himself until everyone comes to kill him. I believe that just like Macbeth Putin will eventually be ruined and have no country left to run. I always ask myself when people attempt things such as invading other countries, like "Do they actually think they will get away with it?" and "What makes them think of invading another country that hasn't done anything to your country?". In the play, close to the end he begins to think he can get away with anything, including serial killing, I guess people convince them selves of what they are doing is right and that it's the best thing for everyone. Putin most likely has the same mind set as Macbeth, he truly believes that invading Ukraine is truly the best thing for everyone. Many people like this fail to think of the people that the other people that could be injured by there actions, in Putin's case, the many citizens of Ukraine who have been kicked from their houses and communities just because of this one deranged man's over falsity of confidence. In the end Putin will be caught and made to resign just like every other president/prime minister who decided to invade another country for no apparent reasons, this will happen to Putin just has how it happened to Macbeth when he was found out and rebelled against by everyone.

Macbeth Monday
This picture is in relation to the recent stabbing spree in Calgary, early one morning at 5 adolescents were stabbed at a party celebrating the end of classes. The stabbings were planned and the killer slowly took the victims into empty places so the killer would not be identified. This highly relates to the story of Macbeth on numerous different levels. It relates between the satanic thoughts of Macbeth and Matthew De Grood, the offender in the stabbings. It also relates on how Macbeth and De Grood planned and committed the chains of murders. The article states "De Grood has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of four men and a woman at a house in Brentwood in the city’s northwest."(CBC News). If Macbeth's story was true today he would be prosecuted in the same manner as De Grood was. Macbeth also planned his murders just as the numerous stabbings were planned. Macbeth plans his murders, with the murderers he hires as he says, "Though I could with barefaced power sweep him from my sight and bid my will avouch it, yet I must not, for certain friends that are both his and mine, whose loves I may not drop, but wail his fall who I myself struck down: and thence it is that I to your assistance do make love- Masking the business from the common eye for sundry weighty reasons." The mind set to which it takes to commit murder is quite satanic and a scary thought. This mindset is very uncommon and for that De Grood is being investigated by a psychiatric doctor to figure out if he is deemed insane or otherwise. This exact investigation makes me wonder if Macbeth was slightly "insane" due to his emotionless state.
